What you will learn

A practical course focussing on the building of a clear and reliable conducting technique, with the regular opportunity to conduct the Saturday morning Conductors' Orchestra. The course takes place on Fridays 18.00 - 20.00 and Saturdays 10:30-13:30.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • Understand the main characteristics of the orchestral sections
  • Understand a range of practical 'off score' points about the scoring of instruments
  • Understand the challenges of working with soloists
  • Understand what is necessary for successfully conducting recitative

Class format and activities

Examining the characteristics of the orchestral sections, including background knowledge about matters not evident from scores.
There will be practical workshops with singers on the art of conducting recitative.
You will be conducting the orchestra several times during the term

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

Good knowledge of music notation and standard musical terms and symbology
Good understanding of clefs and transposition
Ability to follow an orchestral score.
