Girls in Jazz

Morley College in partnership with Guildhall School of Music & Drama invites young female instrumentalists and vocalists aged 11-18 to an exciting day of practical workshops led by bassist Amy Baldwin, pianist, vocalist and composer Joy Ellis and saxophonist and composer Josephine Davies learning about improvisation, jazz standards and women in jazz. The day will feature a performance by the fantastic workshop leaders and culminate in an informal sharing performance in Morley College’s Emma Cons Hall.

All abilities, instruments and levels of experience are welcome to join with a range of groups suitable for everyone. Experience in jazz performance is not essential.

Admission free but registration required. For further information see below.

Workshop Groups

The Girls in Jazz day will be run in three groups to cater for varying levels of experience in jazz. Participants should indicate their level of experience in playing and performing jazz on their registration form

Group 1: for young female instrumentalists and vocalists who are new to jazz and improvisation or have a limited amount of pre-existing experience and are keen to learn more, develop new skills and confidence in playing jazz. Led by jazz musician, double and electric bassist, Amy Baldwin.

Group 2: for young female instrumentalists and vocalists who have existing experience in jazz and improvising and are interested in taking these skills further, developing confidence and experience of performing in an ensemble with other young learners. Suitable for young people that have already performed jazz ensembles and feel okay about being asked to improvise already. Led by vocalist and pianist Joy Ellis.

Group 3: for female instrumentalists who are more experienced playing jazz and are more confident improvisers. Suitable for players who already have some experience playing with jazz ensembles and are looking to develop their skills in improvisation further. Led by saxophonist and composer Josephine Davies, this group will suit those musicians looking to hone their skills in improvisation and trade solos in a jam session context.
