  • Class format and activities

Classes will take place onsite in a performance space with 2 grand pianos (1 Steinway D and 1 Yamaha C5). Each student plays several times a term and works in detail with the tutor. Usually 3 students perform during the course of a session. The attending students are urged to make comments and partake in the proceedings. Hearing others perform, a great variety of repertoire, is just as important a part of learning. You will need to follow and contribute to discussions in English. Music Study can include the use of digital resources such as listening to recordings, watching videos online, using appropriate mobile applications and following Google Classroom to enhance your learning inside and outside the classroom. Music study also offers a range of benefits including being an enjoyable way to enhance wellbeing. Music practice at Morley can also serve to enhance skills relevant for employment including developing creativity, developing high-concentration levels, building self-confidence, working to deadlines, being able to control nerves and working as part of a team.

    Entry requirements

Entry is subject to audition. You should prepare two contrasting pieces. You will be advised of a class suitable to your playing level.

What you need to know before you enrol

In addition to the entry requirement, students must also be prepared to spend a significant amount of time practising their works out of the class time. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e.: progression to another course. Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. This course requires study/completion of activities outside of class time.

    What you need

Music scores relevant to the lessons and notebook and pencil. Each student should keep a journal where they can record feedback from the tutor and to reflect on their progress both in class and during their own practice out of college. Extra materials will be provided by the tutor.

    What you can do next

The course runs throughout the year and you can usefully repeat it for as many terms as you want. You may also be interested in joining a chamber music class, such as 'Advanced Chamber Music & Piano Accompaniment' and 'Chamber Performers' Group'.
