Aimed at pianists between grade 5-8 standard, this course is designed to offer a deeper understanding of the technical requirements, stylistic interpretation and performance of a broad range of intermediate piano repertoire. Emphasis will be placed on fostering healthy, ergonomic technique, tone production, pedalling technique and the co-ordination skills required to deliver confident and coherent performances at the piano. Classes will also cover important aspects of music theory and musicianship. A regular practice routine is essential for progress at this level. This term, we will focus on music from the romantic period
Each class will take place in a workshop/masterclass format, with students performing to the group on a grand piano. Detailed feedback will be provided by the tutor, and peers will be encouraged to constructively critique one another. 3-6 students will play each week, whilst the others will have the opportunity to work on smaller technical matters with the tutor.
Pianists must be of minimum Grade 5 standard for entry into this class. Excellent attendance and punctuality is expected.
You should have access to an acoustic piano so that you can practise between classes. You should also budget around £15 for music scores. Music scores may also be available free online from IMSLP.
You will need to bring all the music scores performed in each class so that can participate in discussions. You should also bring a notebook and pencil.
