What you will learn

This introductory course is for anyone who wants to find out more about Earth Science for fun or for future study. Learn how knowledge of soil, rocks, fossils and structure of the earth can help us interpret our landscape and understand the threats to our environment.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Classify and explain the formation different types of rock
  • Investigate the characteristics of different types of soil and their effect on the landscape
  • Describe the movement of tectonic plates and understand the origins of earthquakes and volcanoes
  • Observe fossils from different geological ages and understand the theories of development of life on earth
  • Explore the energy balance of the earth and the evidence for global warming in the geological record
  • Use apparatus, measuring techniques and materials in the laboratory
