What you will learn

Get better at writing for work, study and everyday life. This course will help you develop your writing skills by giving you a clearer understanding of English grammar as well as strategies to improve your spelling and use of punctuation. You must be working at Entry 3 to join this course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Apply grammar knowledge to enhance writing by using a variety of sentence structures and verb forms.
  • Use appropriate vocabulary and descriptive language to enrich writing.
  • Demonstrate effective use of paragraphs through the use of topic sentences and supporting details.
  • Apply grammar and writing skills to real-life contexts, such as writing emails, letters and filling out forms.

Class format and activities

You will learn through reading and writing, focusing on grammatical structures and strategies to improve your writing. You will work on your own, with others in a group and take part in discussions. You will be given regular assignments to complete in class and for homework. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to an advanced-level course.

Entry requirements

You must be fluent in spoken English and be studying at Entry 3. All new students need to take an assessment before they can enrol. Assessment dates are updated regularly on our website.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance is expected from all our students. You will be required to complete homework outside class time and be able to use the internet.

What you need

You will need an A4 lined writing pad with margin, a ring binder folder for your work, pens and a dictionary.

If you have excellent attendance and successfully complete the course, you may be advised to progress to a Functional Skills English course.
