What you will learn

Watercolour is one of the most rewarding and versatile paints to work with and can be used for rapid sketch work and initial studies as well as highly finished works. Its adaptability as a painting medium enables the artist the opportunity to work both indoors and outdoors, recording things seen from direct observation, translating imagery from photographs or exploring the imagination. It can be applied and manipulated in a variety of ways, allowing the artist the opportunity to investigate and develop a range of techniques and approaches. This course will encourage you to create work in a group environment, while at the same time exploring your own individual ideas and potential through particular exercises and personal projects. Beginners are welcome.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Explore ways to develop watercolours from direct observation and imagery such as photographs
Generate and explore a range of techniques and approaches to using and manipulating watercolour
Explore ways of using and manipulating drawing with watercolour
Explore how watercolour can be combined with other mediums, such as pen, pencil, ink
Have a developing knowledge of how colours mix and interact through the medium of watercolour
Advance your knowledge of historical and contemporary artists who explore and manipulate watercolour in different ways

Class format and activities

You will have the opportunity to identify whether you wish to work on an individual project or a group theme, which will vary from course to course. The theme of this module will be the relation of watercolour painting to drawing. There will be a variety of subjects to paint from observation plus painting from the figure. There will be an emphasis on sharing knowledge, experience and supporting each other via group discussions and crits online The tutor will facilitate group discussions, give presentations and support students with their work online using Zoom, Morley Moodle and email.

This course is available to complete beginners as well as more experienced learners.

What you need to know before you enrol

This is an online course, offered during COVID-19 restrictions and will involve using Morley Moodle and Zoom. You can sign and use Morley Moodle after enrolment. You can sign in to Zoom for free and use this as a visual online meeting environment with both tutors and students. No strenuous exercise or workload is required from students. There may be a little homework study but this is optional.

What you need

It would be useful to have a sketchbook/paper, pencils, Pens [Fineliners if possible] and black fluid drawing ink or Indian ink. You will need to have your own Watercolour paints [tubes or pans as well as brushes: [Flats and Rounds, each approx size 6 and 12] as well as some tissues/paper towels. You will need watercolour paper or a watercolour pad and a palette of some kind to mix your watercolours. You can order these materials online from shops such as Cass art, Jacksons art supplies or Great Art supplies. Other materials needed will be advised during the course.
