What you will learn

This course introduces the basic tools, materials and practices of watercolour and other water-based media, with an emphasis on the exploration of contemporary approaches to these media. You will work with a range of water-based media and materials, including watercolour, gouache, water-soluble pencils and crayons, brush and ink, as well as a variety of brushes and papers.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Develop a range of watercolour techniques, including transparent washes, masking, wet-into-wet blending, and dry brush
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic colour theory.
  • Apply water-based media materials and techniques in the creation of a series of representational and abstract images
  • Demonstrate an awareness of historical precedents and contemporary trends as they relate to the use watercolour and other water-based media.

    Working on practical projects with tutor support, you will be given demonstrations such as paint handling, individual tuition, handouts and visual aids, and there will be regular group reviews and discussions.

    Entry requirements

    This course is open to all levels and experience, and is also suitable for those wishing to build a portfolio for progression onto an Art & Design Foundation or Access programme. More experienced students will be able to further develop their skills, and explore new techniques and materials

    What you need to know before you enrol

    This class takes place in WD11 which is on the first floor with no lift access.

    What you need

    Drawing Paper for the session, a tear off palette, paper towel and a water container will be provided at your work station. A list of the materials needed for each week will be provided at the start of the course.
