This course focuses on "Portraits of Women: The Female Figure in Italian Painting", exploring the representation of women in Italian painting from the medieval period through the contemporary era. Beginning with the sacred and symbolic depictions of the Virgin Mary and female saints in medieval art, the course then traces the evolution of the female figure through the Renaissance, Baroque, and modern periods, analysing masterpieces by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, Caravaggio, Giovanni Boldini, and Amedeo Modigliani. Through this chronological journey, students will investigate the roles of women as muses, saints, and symbols of beauty, as well as their representation in Italian art, offering a comprehensive view of gender, identity, and artistic innovation over time. Students will enhance their language skills through reading, writing, and speaking activities focused on the topics, expanding their vocabulary and fluency in Italian.
