What you will learn

Pâte de Verre is a kiln-formed glass casting method that means "glass paste ". This technique is to mix colour glass granules with binders and then apply the glass to the inner surface of a negative mould. You will learn mould making techniques and be able to create a range of objects and shapes in 2 and 3 dimensions using a variety of glass colours and surface textures. Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Introduce to new glass kiln-formed glass practice skills using glass granules and powders, clay modeling, plaster mould making and casting techniques
  • Pursue personal project work by making vessels, architectural pieces, or sculptural work
  • Develop ideas and individual creative identity through project work
  • Explore and practice new sculptural techniques and mediums that you haven't tried before
  • Encourage good workshop practice including Health and Safety concerning yourself and other studio users
  • Develop critical decision-making skills about your work and as a member of the class/group

  • Class format and activities

    You will work on individual projects exploring different mould making sculptural techniques and mediums. Short projects are set as an introduction to new materials and as a guide to the possibilities and language of sculpture. Step by step instruction and demonstration is given on new techniques. Handouts are given on Health & Safety, materials, techniques & reference materials. Tuition is primarily one-to-one and some group works with beginners. All learners negotiate individual learning goals with tutor and record and assess these goals on the Individual learning Plans. To ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

    Entry requirements

    All levels welcome including beginners with an interest in exploring materials, processes in 2D & 3 Dimensional forms.

    What you need

    Sketchbook and drawing materials. Notebook and pen. Protective clothing (i.e. recommended overall or apron, strong shoes, or boots). Some extra fees will be charged for materials and course materials fees.

    What you can do next

    The course links well to architectural and sculptural projects that can be explored in other kiln formed glass courses at Morley college. We have a range of glass courses at all levels of ability, including a certified Btec L3 National Certificate in Art and Design- Glass. Students can also look to progress onto other part or full-time Glass courses such as UAL L2 in Art and design to learn a wide range of glass techniques. Your tutor is also happy to advise you.
