What you will learn

Working with a published author, this course will focus on encouraging your confidence in writing, finding inspiration, and making your words sing on the page. Subjects will include: writing what you most want and need to write; voice and character; place and setting; creating lively description; dialogue; narrative shapes and plots; writing for enjoyment and pleasure. Lessons will include inspiration/writing prompts and quiet, focused writing time. There will also be regular opportunities throughout the term to share and receive constructive, helpful, encouraging feedback on your writing in progress.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Increase confidence in your writing
  • Increase knowledge of various writing techniques
  • Find more inspiration as a writer
  • Increase enjoyment of writing
  • Receive constructive feedback on your writing
  • Increase community with other writers and give helpful, constructive feedback on others’ work

Class format and activities

In the first class, we will read and discuss one or two excerpts by published authors as inspiration for your own writing, followed by a writing prompt and live writing time. There will be opportunity to share what you’ve written with the group, though you won’t be forced to share if you don’t feel ready to do so. The second class will be wholly dedicated to the group sharing their own writing. Up to three writers may share up to 2500 words each, giving and receiving constructive, helpful, encouraging feedback. The course will continue in this pattern (one week of reading and writing, followed by one week of the group sharing work) until the end of term.
