What you will learn

Twined basketry uses soft materials – two active weavers are woven around vertical warps, or stakes. You can use a wide range of materials, from natural cordage and vines to wire and baler twine. Weaving can be close, which produces a strong, durable basket, or more open, which results in a more open, flexible construction. You can also create pattern by changing colour.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Use different starting methods to make a twined basket
  • Use both open and close twining to create different effects
  • Create patterns by changing colours
  • Produce a series of samples or finished works in different materials

    The tutor will demonstrate techniques and bring inspirational samples, You will be given time to practise these techniques with constructive feedback to develop your own projects. Group discussions and one to one support will enable you to progress

    Entry requirements

    No previous experience is necessary, but a degree of manual dexterity is required.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    The class is situated on the second floor of the Nancy Seear Building. There is partial disabled access via a stair lift. Please contact ALS on: 0207 450 1972 or Art & Design Admin on: 0207 450 1934 before enrolling if you have any mobility support needs.

    What you need

    Pen and notebook to make notes, folder for handouts. Basic materials will be provided, but you may want to explore others when working on your own projects. A large bag to take home work in progress.
