Open hexagonal plaiting is popular in South East Asia and the Far East, where bamboo is often used to make lightweight but strong containers as well as hats and fish traps. You will use materials like cane, plastic strapping tape and paper to make baskets and balls, and you will also experiment with creating more complex patterns by cross lacing.
The tutor will bring in and discuss relevant samples and demonstrate techniques. You will practise the techniques with observation and feedback from the tutor. You will also share your knowledge and experience with the group through discussion and show and tell.
No previous experience is necessary, but a degree of manual dexterity is required.
The class is situated on the second floor of the Nancy Seear Building. There is partial disabled access via a stair lift. Please contact ALS on: 0207 450 1972 before enrolling if you have any mobility support needs.
Pen and notebook to make notes, folder for handouts. Basic materials will be provided, but you may want to explore others when working on your own projects.
