What you will learn

The Esports industry is one of the fastest growing sectors on the planet, it’s on course for 1 billion USD income in 2020 alone. This programme will enable you to make full use of all Esports contexts and possibilities and will unleash your creativity through a broad range of technical tools and resources. Our curriculum is highly practical. You will be able to experiment with different media and will develop the collaborative, communicative, and problem solving skills that you will need to succeed and make your mark in this exciting and varied industry. Our brand new Esports studio has enjoyed significant investment and you will find yourself in one of the best-equipped Esports educational studios in the country. Yourself and your peers will make use of top-of-the-range equipment designed to help build your experience of the industry and gain genuine insight into its processes. You will experiment with Esports genres and formats, live broadcasting, Twitch streaming, team gaming, individual performance, health, wellbeing and fitness, Esports industry skills, filmmaking, video editing, motion graphics, Adobe Illustrator and After Effects and much more. You will have the unique opportunity to join a team as part of Morley College Chelsea and begin competing against other College teams in an Esports game of your choosing. You will analyse the performance of yourself and others, creative bespoke game and skill development plans to optimise you and your team’s abilities. A part of the course will deepen your awareness of the impact of media messages and you will spend time discussing and analysing elements of culture, and context. You will be encouraged to collaborate and form part of exhibitions and cross centre projects and will be guided to fully understanding the evolution of media and how your future fits within it. The course will help you organise, plan and deliver ambitious projects for varied audiences and contexts.

Class format and activities

As this is an online plus course, the practical aspects of the different units will be delivered at the Chelsea Centre for the Creative Industries whilst adhering to social distancing guidelines. Theoretical content, as well as group and individual tutorials will be delivered online using Microsoft Teams. All course materials (project briefs, background notes, handouts, YouTube videos, links to content etc.) will be available online and accessible via our Virtual Learning Environment, Google Classroom. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed regularly. Throughout the course you will be greatly encouraged and entirely supported to reach your full potential with constructive feedback provided by your tutor. At the end of your studies you will have the opportunity to exhibit a body of your creative work at an exhibition. Assessment Methods: Achievement on the course will be measured by completion of set assignment briefs, both internally and externally verified. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the program you will have the opportunity to discuss your personal and professional ambitions and goals with your tutor and set your own targets linked to your intended pathway in the future. You will be suitably prepared for assignment briefs in the form of practical and theoretical sessions. At the end of each year you will gain the opportunity to create a substantial practical piece of work as part of a team, or individually, that will contribute to your unit outcomes and individual grading profile.

What you need to know before you enrol

You do not need to have prior knowledge of - or experience in - Esports as a subject prior to applying, we will teach you what you need to know! If you have not achieved a grade 4 in both English and Maths at GCSE, you will need to study these qualifications alongside your Esports course here at Morley College. You need to be aware that this is a fast-moving, proactive and forward-thinking course placing you at the centre of contemporary media industry education, as such, you will be expected to put time in outside of course hours to achieve a high standard of work.

What you need

You need a positive, can-do attitude with plenty of enthusiasm for the creative industries. You will be eager to learn, bursting with potential and ready to challenge your understanding of the world in which we live. Collaboration will be necessary as a part of this program, so you will be capable of playing a key role in group work. You will need access to a computer at home, and ideally a form of gaming console (this can include PC).

What you can do next

You will gain the opportunity to apply for university as a part of this program, you will be led through the UCAS process and be supported in a pathway that suits you. Apprenticeships are a viable alternative for those interested in pursuing work experience following the course. You may choose to enter the industry as a freelancer/self-employed professional as a direct result of the skills you have gained on ED Esports at Morley College. In your own time, or as a professional gamer, you may elect to start or join or start an amateur or semi-professional Esports team to continue your journey.
