What you will learn

In this 5-week session, you'll develop essential skills in mark-making, printmaking, and bookbinding while exploring narrative and sequence inspired by personal landscapes. Drawing from both Eastern and Western techniques, we'll delve into creative ways to illustrate and archive our favourite landscapes. You'll use various drawing and printmaking techniques to create images for two artist's books—a concertina/zig-zag book and a case-bound book. This course aims to kickstart your journey in creating artists' books, focusing on generating and incorporating content into thoughtful designs.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Through using various materials, develop proficiency in mark-making techniques
  • Through engaging in drawing practices and exploring the sensory aspects of landscapes, students will learn to improve their observational skills while also discovering creative and illustrative methods for depicting landscapes.
  • Acquire knowledge and skill in printmaking, using relevant tools and materials with confidence.
  • Learn fundamental bookbinding skills, including how to make concertina (zigzag) and a case bound books
  • Through collaborative discussions and practical sessions, learn how to integrate illustration and printmaking techniques into the creation of cohesive art books.

    There will be demonstration, group discussion, one to one tuition and practical project work. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

    Entry requirements

    No previous knowledge of bookbinding is required. This class is a great introduction to making books

    What you need to know before you enrol

    Health and Safety information will be given at the start of the course and in subsequent lessons wherever necessary. The studio is accessible via a lift and there is an adjustable height desk available.

    Pencil, eraser, notebook for taking notes. We will discuss in the first session if there are any other tools and materials you may want to buy.
