What you will learn

For new creative writers or those looking for a way to further develop their writing abilities and get new ideas, advice on all aspects of fiction writing will be given. You will be encouraged to develop your individual writing voice and to read your work in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. Although it is a 3-term course, new students are welcome to join at the beginning of any term.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Recognise your own writing capabilities and strengths and draw confidence from these
  • Produce a variety of written work in response to writing exercises on a weekly basis
  • Recognise and write using different narrative points of view with confidence
  • Recognise the value of and utilise direct observation and the five senses in creative writing
  • Critically evaluate and discuss a piece of creative writing with sensitivity
  • Begin work on a creative writing project of your own

  • Class format and activities

    You will learn through group exercises, feedback and discussion including presentation, handouts. Giving and receiving constructive feedback on yours and others writing. Discussion and experimentation with different writing techniques. Short home writing assignments will be given.

    Entry requirements

    This is a beginners’ course and no previous experience in creative writing is required. Level 2 literacy in English is needed, as is a willingness to share your writing with others and to explore a range of disciplines and forms of writing.

    This course continues each term throughout the academic year; or you might like to try an intermediate or improvers' course in creative writing if you feel ready.
