Printmaking and Bookbinding
…
This course is ideal for those wishing to build on their Japanese woodcut skills. The Mokuhanga technique is entirely non-toxic using watercolour pigments and not oil based inks to make nuanced prints. It also requires no press so it is easy to set up at home. Over the course we will cover: a contextual traditional and contemporary look at Japanese woodcut, develop advanced cutting using Japanese tools, printing techniques using hanshita and bokashi, and create an edition of prints onto handmade Washi paper
These are evening classes taking place in Room C32 (main building). The tutor will deliver a series of lectures on traditional and contemporary Japanese woodcut through Power Point presentations, books and her own collection of prints. Initially through demonstration and practice the course will cover advanced cutting, traditional hanshita transfer, and printing bokashi. Working independently students will further embed the techniques learned on their own print project. All students will engage in group crits, discussions and research making for a lively studio dynamic.
This course is ideal for the student who has already completed the Beginners course and has some knowledge of the process. It is designed to build on that knowledge to create more sophisticated prints using more advanced techniques than are available on the beginners course.
This course is designed so that one week builds on the week before- to ensure that you thoroughly enjoy the course it is advisable to commit to the term. The class starts promptly at 6.00pm, in Room C32 in the main building, please leave enough time to find us! Please note that there is a minimal charge (typically £7.50) for the woodblocks and paper used, all other materials, watercolour pigment, nori and use of college tools are included in the fee.
For the first class it is a good idea to bring your own drawings or photos for your initial design. Please keep it simple! Do bring a notebook and if you have them your own set of woodcutting tools. There is no need to bring aprons.
