Russell is the UK’s leading expert in waxcarving, which he has taught since 1996. The training technique he designed is now used all over the world. He is co-author of Waxcarving for Jewellers, which has been called the bible for waxcarving. He is the principal Admin and expert for the Facebook group Waxcarving for Jewellery with 16,000 members which gives free advice and encouragement to professionals and hobbyists all over the world.
Russell has a long list of specialist qualifications in jewellery, stone setting and goldsmithing. He is renowned for his figurative waxcarving and has provided his services to a wide variety of Designers and jewellery houses, including De Beers, Garrard, Vivienne Westwood, Solange Azagury-Partridge, Leo De Vroomen, Faberge, amongst many others.
Russell has won many awards for his work from the Goldsmith’s Craftsmanship and Design Awards, also the Royal Society of British Sculptors and was in Professional Jeweller’s Hot 100 in 2014. He is now a judge on the Awards and a member of its council. He is a Fellow and former Chairman of the Institute of Professional Goldsmiths and a member of their executive committee.
Russell’s own work is inspired mythology, folklore, history (natural, ancient, post-classical, medieval and early to mid-modern) and Victorian illustration.
