You will learn collagraph and carborundum printing techniques, using cardboard and acrylic sheets, and understand the different ways in which each can be used. Collagraph uses cardboard as a base for making a plate, carborundum is a painterly technique that uses acrylic mediums and gritty pastes that will then hold ink. You will explore combining these printing techniques with other methods to suit your work. You will explore using colour through multi-plate printing and become more confident in colour mixing. Alongside this, you will be encouraged to think about and articulate your ideas and personal vision through discussion and presenting your work to your peer group. The course is suitable for beginners and more experienced students.

What you need to know before you enrol
Health and safety information will be given at the start of the course and subsequent lessons where necessary. You will be asked to sign a form declaring that you agree to follow procedures as advised. Some chemicals used may be harmful in pregnancy. Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant and they will advise you as to necessary precautions. Some of the presses and processes require physical strength; the tutor will assist if you need help. Note: at present there is no wheelchair access to the print studio, and the studios are on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building. If you have any mobility issues please contact the department prior to enrolling. Note: There is no wheelchair access to the studio
What you need
You will need pencils, paintbrushes, a craft knife or scalpel, a sketchbook or notebook and a portfolio to take work home in. The course fee includes most studio consumables (basic inks, solvents etc) but you will have to pay for paper, card, acrylic plate etc. These are available to buy in the department and prices will be discussed at the start of the class. There are ways of keeping costs down by recycling materials, and collagraph and carborundum plates are relatively cheap to make. Further requirements will be discussed at the first and subsequent classes.
