What you will learn

Lindy Hop - Intermediate9-weeks In this 9-week Intermediate Lindy Hop course, you will learn more complex figures, developing ways to integrate them into your current practice. You will also learn portions of classic routines, that you can “quote” in your dancing. You will also have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge and skills in partnering technique and individual styling.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Dance Solo and Partnered Charleston figures
  • Be familiar with and be able to dance portions of The Lindy Chorus (choreographed by Frankie Manning).
  • Confidently dance a couple of classic Strolls.
  • Demonstrate a deeper knowledge of the history of Lindy Hop and how the modern/contemporary scene debates and continues its legacy..
  • Understand the history of the Charleston and Big Apple dances as well as current etiquette at social swing dances.

Class format and activities

The class will begin with a group stroll to warm up. The main part of the session will be working on Lindy Hop, rotating partners. There will be a break, during which we will watch a short video clip and discuss it (this may be footage of original dancers from the 1930s onwards, or of contemporary swing dancers, or other related material) Two sessions (end of half term and end of term) will be dedicated Social Dance Practice in which the session will be a social dance where the tutor will be on hand to offer advice and tips.

Entry requirements

You must have taken the 3-week Beginners Course, or be able to demonstrate the 6-count and 8-count Lindy Hop figures to take this course. Please consult your doctor if you are pregnant, have any serious health conditions or a history of injury. Please inform your tutor if there is any physical activity you have be advised to avoid.

What you need to know before you enrol

Lindy Hop is a partner dance, so you will need to be comfortable dancing with another person in close physical proximity. We practise the social dance aspect in class by rotating partners, so you will need to be willing to dance with different people. Lead and Follow roles are not gender-defined and anybody is welcome to take either role. A reasonable level of fitness is required. If you have any physical restrictions, please make the tutor aware of this before the start of class. Be aware that each session involves on average 1. 5hrs of dancing and 15 mins pausing for discussion.

What you need

Comfortable shoes with a low or flat heel that allows you to move freely (i. e. , no trainers). Water. Notepad - you will be encouraged to make your own notes (text or video)
