By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Show some understanding of how the voice works at a foundational level
  • Demonstrate an awareness of posture, alignment and breathing

  • Sing exercises to help increase your vocal range, agility and resonance
  • Understand more about the music you learn

Class format and activities

Classes will begin with a range of physical and vocal warm-ups followed by technical and musical exercises before exploring a selection of songs. Repertoire will be carefully chosen to develop your technical and musical understanding, explore unaccompanied singing and working with a piano accompaniment, and some basic interpretative skills. Regular feedback from your tutor will be shared, in a constructive and supportive environment, and your achievement on the course will be measured by your progress towards the learning outcomes as shown above. You are encouraged to practise regularly. Your tutor will suggest specific goals on which to work, offering additional resources to support your learning, as appropriate.

Entry requirements

No prior experience is required, simply a willingness to experiment and an open mind!

What you need to know before you enrol

As a complete beginner, you will wish to build some core foundations of efficient vocal technique and to develop confidence in singing. Regular practice is a cornerstone of learning to sing. This course involves gentle physical warm-ups. If there are any issues that may affect these exercises, please communicate those to the tutor in the first session you attend as the tutor will be happy to make adjustments.

What you need

You will need to bring along resources provided by the tutor ahead of each session. A notebook and pencil are useful.
