What you will learn

This 2-day course provides a unique opportunity to make rag paper and investigate its versatility as an art form. Following Western papermaking methods, you will use professional equipment to make sheets of paper before exploring traditional Japanese techniques to manipulate paper, create 3D form and create a range of decorative outcomes from your handmade papers. This course has relevance across disciplines whether you are a printer, bookbinder, textile or installation artist or just curious to find out more. It is suitable for both beginners and those with more experience.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Understand how pulp is prepared for papermaking using cotton linters and recycled rag paper.
Create a range of handmade papers
Learn how to create 3D form from flat sheets of paper and poured paper pulp

Class format and activities

The tutor will bring in and discuss relevant examples and demonstrate techniques. You will practice the techniques with observation and feedback. There will be an emphasis on sharing knowledge and experience through discussion, and group critique. To ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course you will have regular and detailed feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

What you need to know before you enrol

If you have any mobility support needs please contact Additional Learning Support on 020 7450 1972 or Art and Design admin on 202 7450 1934 before enrolling. The studio is located on the second floor of the Nancy Seear Building on King Edward Walk. There is a lift to the first floor and a chair lift can be operated up to the second floor.

What you need

Two packs of J cloths, a jam jar, a plastic box or strong plastic bag for damp sheets of paper, a notebook and pen, a few newspapers, ideas or examples from your practice.
