What you will learn

This course will offer an opportunity to explore the potential of pulp and handmade paper to create 3D form. Using professional equipment to create handmade paper you will learn how to cast and emboss paper and create 3D form from flat sheets of paper and coloured paper pulp

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Prepare and process fibres for papermaking in a Hollander Beaterusing cotton rag pulp and recycled rag paper
  • Learn how to cast paper to create 3D form from flat sheets of paper and poured paper pulp
  • Explore embossing techniques to create texture and pattern

  • Class format and activities

    Students will learn through observing tutor demonstration followed by practical experience supported by technical handouts. There will be an emphasis on sharing knowledge and experience through discussion, show and tell and group critique at the end of the session. The tutor will facilitate group discussions and work with students one-to-one and in groups. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course you will have regular and detailed feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

    The course is suitable for beginners and those wishing to build on their papermaking and textile skills.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    The Textiles studio is situated on the second floor with a lift to the first and stair lift to the second. If you have restricted mobility please contact the Art & Design Administrator on 02074501934 or Learning Support on 02074501835 before enrolling.

    What you need

    Two packs of J cloths, a jam jar, a plastic box or strong plastic bag for damp sheets of paper, plastic, glass or stainless steel objects/bowls for casting.
