What you will learn

Join artist Kate Wilson on this Painting Masterclass exploring the urban landscape and often overlooked edge-lands. Develop a personal imagery in response to the subject matter, and hone your drawing and painting skills. Kate lives and works in South London and paints the familiar objects of her daily landscape. Her work deals with the relationship between the natural and the manmade – questioning what is beautiful and what is ugly. Kate studied fine art painting at Winchester School of Art and the R.A. Schools and is a winner of the Bateson Drawing Award and a Royal Academy Gold medal. Recent exhibitions include: R.A. Summer Exhibition, Lynn Painter-Stainers’ Prize, New English Art Club, ING Discerning Eye, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and the Royal Society of British Artists. Kate was shortlisted for the Jackson’s Painting Prize in 2022 and won the Maire Ragnild oil painting prize and a Parker Harris Award in 2023. Her book "Painting and Drawing: Materials and Techniques for Contemporary Artists" is published by Thames and Hudson in the UK and Harper Collins in the US.

Class format and activities

This is a practical course and you will spend most of your time painting, drawing, and taking photos for reference. Kate will teach you via PowerPoint slides, practical demonstrations, 1:1 tuition and group crits. Sessions are based onsite at Morley Waterloo in C33 (the Denzil Forrester Studio). Some hours (2 - 3 days a term) will be spent off-site drawing and photographing at locations within London. Projects will include: Finding your subject matter: inspiration, location, taking photographs, sketching on the spot Playing with composition: drawing from memory, selecting and drawing from photos, combining and reassembling ideas Experimenting with colour and meaning: emotional colour theory, complementaries, saturated and unsaturated colour, colour inversions Exploring paint and ways to apply it: grounds, additive and subtractive approaches, tools Finding your voice: developing meaning, scaling up

Entry requirements

This is an intermediate / advanced course designed for people with drawing and painting experience.

What you need to know before you enrol

Each session builds on the one before and you are advised to attend all classes. It will be beneficial if you can make a little time at home each week to think about and experiment with personal imagery based on the exercises introduced in the studio.

What you need

It is advisable to bring your own paint and brushes, but you can purchase paper and use of drawing and painting materials at cost price from your tutor. For the first session, please bring a sketchbook for drawing in and a smartphone or digital camera for taking photos. A personal laptop and memory stick will also be useful. It is advisable to wear old clothes to all sessions or bring an apron or overalls.
