What you will learn

This course is for students who have completed Level 2 ESOL and hope to progress onto GCSE English in the future. It will prepare you for the Pearson Edexcel Functional Skills English assessments at Level 2. The qualification gives you the opportunity to gain a qualification for work, study and life, provides a foundation for progression to employment and further education and helps develop skills for everyday life. For most students, the course will be free of charge.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Read a range of different text types confidently and applying knowledge and understanding of texts to your own writing.
  • Write texts of varying complexity, with accuracy, effectiveness, and correct spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • Listen, understand and make relevant contributions to discussions with others in a range of contexts
  • Apply your understanding of language to adapt delivery and content to suit audience and purpose

Class format and activities

The class will be interactive and creative and you’ll work individually, in pairs or in small groups. You’ll be expected to complete regular homework. You will also receive regular supportive feedback from your teacher. Achievement on your course will be measured by internal and external assessments. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course, including practice assessments. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets linked to the learning outcomes and future goals.

Entry requirements

This course is for fluent speakers of English who have completed ESOL Level 2. You will need to do an assessment before being accepted onto this course.

Excellent attendance and punctuality are required from all students. You will also need to make time to complete work outside the classroom.

Functional Skills English qualifications are the first step in showing employers and others that you have a good level of English reading, writing and communication. Gaining a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification will prepare you to progress to an English GCSE course.
