Soldering is an essential but challenging skill in jewellery making. Improve your skills and learn how to pick, stick feed and sweat solder with structured exercises while completing a piece of jewellery. For students with some experience of jewellery making.
On the first day we will discuss the soldering process, the use of flux and anti-flux and binding wire. We will then practice various techniques on base metal: melting, pallion, pick feeding, stick feeding and sweat soldering. On the second day we will use all of these techniques to make a decorative sphere from copper and brass. You will also gain confidence in using a jewellery torch, the different flames and learn how to use different pieces of soldering equipment.
The course is designed for students who already have basic jewellery making skills and would like to extend their soldering knowledge.
The jewellery stuio is on the 3rd floor of the main building, there is lift access. You need a moderate level of fitness to use jewellery making equipment. Some chemicals used may be harmful in pregnancy. Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant and they will advise you as to necessary precautions.
Apron, notebook and pen. If you want to practice on silver bring some with you, but this is not necessary. If you have a particularly tricky piece of soldering you'd like to do, bring it along.
