What you will learn

Do you love making jewellery but want to start a business or apply to higher education? This intermediate level jewellery making certificate will guide you through various training modules to set you up as a confident jeweller.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Work confidently with metals and other materials to produce professionally finished pieces of jewellery
Work through a series of technical exercises and designs from initial conception to final completion
Develop a portfolio of work, designs and technical knowledge to aid applications for further training, work or development of personal practice
Work confidently in a group applying health and safety guidelines

Class format and activities

This is a year long practical course for intermediate level students aimed towards developing a professional approach to jewellery making. You will follow various modules in each term helping you to develop your jewellery making skills, design development, and business and branding awareness. You will follow technical projects in etching, press forming, stone setting and enamelling. Each of these technical projects will be followed by a design brief where you will explore designing and making an individual piece using the techniques learnt. You will also design and make a piece for a competition, develop a small collection and collaborate with fashion/ textile students to create jewellery pieces for a fashion catwalk show. Each term there will be a series of “Looking At” sessions where we will share and look at as a group: Logos, brand awareness, invoices, packaging, business cards, pricing, photographing jewellery, writing an artists statements and using social media. There is also a lesson on building a website. The year culminates in a show where you will exhibit your jewellery and work as a team to promote the show and liaise with potential customers. This is a progressive and directional course. You will be expected to do homework and maintain a benchbook/ sketchbook.

Entry requirements

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact helen.smith@morleycollege.ac.uk to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. This is an intermediate level course and you will be expected to have a good grasp of basic jewellery making techniques.

What you need to know before you enrol

The jewellery studio is on the 3rd floor of the main building, there is lift access. You need a moderate level of fitness to be able to use some of the jewellery equipment or machinery. Some chemicals used may be harmful in pregnancy. Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant and they will advise you as to necessary precautions

What you need

All tools needed to take part in the course are available in the workshop. We also provide basic materials in reasonable quantities, such as base metals and other materials such as paper, acrylics, enamel etc. There are some items you will need to purchase yourself such as precious metals (silver and gold), stones, saw blades and specific sized drill bits. Your tutor will help you assess your metal requirements for each project and provide a list of suppliers. It would also be helpful to bring:• Sketchbook and pens/pencils.• Apron and hair band to tie back long hair.
