For students who have a knowledge of basic jewellery making techniques wishing to develop their own ideas and improve their skills to a professional level. Students should have attended jewellery making classes regularly and feel confident to work independently. Visual research and the development of original ideas are an important aspect of this course.
This is a practical class and you will be learning to make pieces of jewellery building on your existing skills. You will learn to work confidently with metals and other materials. You will be set a design project to encourage research and develop original jewellery designs and we will cover a series of techniques that feed into this design project. You will also be encouraged to develop personal work with technical and design advice from the tutor. You will learn through group demonstrations, peer group discussions and with individual help and guidance from your tutor. You will be encouraged to use a bench book to record your designs and development. You will be asked to complete a learning statement to assess your progress.
This is an Intermediate level jewellery class. It is recommended that you should have attended Beginners and Beginners and Continuing jewellery making classes and feel confident to start working independently with advice and guidance from the tutor.
The jewellery studio is on the 3rd floor of the main building, there is lift access. You need a moderate level of fitness and arm strength for some jewellery techniques. Some chemicals used may be harmful in pregnancy. Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant and they will advise you as to necessary precautions
All tools needed to take part in the course are available in the workshop. We also provide basic materials in reasonable quantities, such as base metals, paper, acrylics, enamel etc. There are some items you will need to purchase yourself such as precious metals (silver and gold), stones, saw blades and specific sized drill bits. Your tutor will help you assess your material requirements for each project and provide a list of suppliers. It would also be helpful to bring: an A5 sketchbook to record your progress and design ideas and a pencil/ pen for taking notes. An apron and hair band to tie back long hair. Please wear sensible footwear- no open toed sandals! Bring warm clothes as we will keep windows and doors open for ventilation.
