What you will learn

Build on previous knowledge, learning and experience with jazz material to begin finding your own voice and style inside of the jazz idiom. This course focuses on diving in to some of the more challenging repertoire of jazz standards, furthering our understanding of jazz improvisation in be-bop and developing our own arrangements of jazz standards.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Improve knowledge and understanding of jazz language in scat improvisation
  • Learn and improvise with the diminished scale
  • Gain confidence to make your own arrangement choices for jazz material
  • Learn to accurately transcribe more complex solos and language

Class format and activities

Vocal warm ups Scales Transcriptions Listening and Discussion In class solo performances with an accompanist Basics of Chart Writing Assessments will be made based on student's performance during the sessions.

Entry requirements

Previous experience with jazz singing - students should be familiar with jazz standard repertoire and already have a number of songs learnt to performance standard. Knowledge and understanding of the Blues scale and the 12 bar blues Have transcribed a solo before (listened to and learnt a solo from a recording) Some previous experience improvising with other musicians Some proficiency in reading chord charts/lead sheets

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. This course requires access to email, and ideally a rudimentary way to record yourself from home (e. g. through a phone microphone). This course also requires students to purchase and download the ireal pro app for practicing from home. This course requires regular practice (including listening) outside of class time.

Access to the ireal pro app. Checking class online platform regularly to always be updated about the contents of the lessons and follow any instruction. Occasionally you will need to print charts and lyrics
