Learn to sing songs from jazz standard repertoire in a variety of different styles, and relate your singing to a basic understanding of jazz harmony. This course is suitable for those who can already sing with some confidence, but with no previous jazz experience. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the following learning outcomes. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i. e. : progression to an advanced-level course.
Vocal warm ups Learning blues and jazz repertoire Improvising exercises Listening and discussion In class solo performances with an accompanist Assessments will be made based on student's performance during the sessions.
Some previous experience with singing in any style - e. g. prior membership of a choir. The ability to feel a pulse in the music and to hold a pitch. An appreciation and love of jazz.
Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. This course requires access to email, and ideally a rudimentary way to record yourself from home (e. g. through a phone microphone). This course requires regular practice (including listening) outside of class time.
Checking class online platform regularly to always be updated about the contents of the lessons and follow any instruction. Occasionally you will need to print your charts and lyrics.
