What you will learn

This term the class will look at a selection of writers who shaped the origins of the language- Dante Alighieri and Niccolo’ Machiavelli will be the two most important. We will examine both historical/political aspects and the linguistic influence these writers had on modern Italian.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Have a greater understanding of the origins of Italian literature
  • Understand its specific significance in the development of Italian culture
  • Explore and discuss issues arising from the texts in terms of the linguistic evolution of the Italian language, its changing styles and trends, and its political and historical implications

    Participating in discussions , Reading text in Italian , Asking and answering questions , Debating issues arising from the literature , Contributing with your own knowledge relevant to the topic. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to an advanced-level course. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress your individual learning aims will be established during the course. It is important that you are committed to regular attendance. You will have regular and constructive feedback from your tutor.

    No formal qualifications are necessary; a working knowledge of the Italian language is required as the course is conducted entirely in Italian.
