This term the class will look at a selection of writers who shaped the origins of the language- Dante Alighieri and Niccolo’ Machiavelli will be the two most important. We will examine both historical/political aspects and the linguistic influence these writers had on modern Italian.
Participating in discussions , Reading text in Italian , Asking and answering questions , Debating issues arising from the literature , Contributing with your own knowledge relevant to the topic. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to an advanced-level course. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress your individual learning aims will be established during the course. It is important that you are committed to regular attendance. You will have regular and constructive feedback from your tutor.
No formal qualifications are necessary; a working knowledge of the Italian language is required as the course is conducted entirely in Italian.
Students will have the opportunity to conduct independent research and present their findings to the rest of the group.

The course is ongoing and every year it will look at a different period of Italian literature. You could progress to university courses on Italian language, history or philosophy.
