What you will learn

A practical creative writing course for writers who are interested in exploring aspects their lives through writing, or are keen to write ‘heritage memoirs’. Students will learn the essentials of memoir writing and will practise techniques to retrieve memories and develop them into short extracts. Classes will cover subjects such as memory and truth, putting other people onto the page, the ethics of memoir writing and shaping your work.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify aspects of your life you would like to explore in your writing.
  • Apply skills and techniques to make your writing more readable and expressive.
  • Write a character sketch.
  • Apply techniques to retrieve memories and write them up into short extracts.

    This is a practical creative writing course. Each week there will different writing activities which will help you to further your knowledge of memoir writing and experiment with your writing style. You will study texts from a range of life writing material and be asked to contribute to class discussions. Each week a small amount of homework will be set.

    Entry requirements

    Written and spoken English to at least Level 2 is desirable.

    You will be asked to use your memory as source material.

    What you need

    Pen, paper and a willingness to ‘have a go’. From time to time the tutor may ask you to bring in items such as objects, photographs etc.
