The many health benefits of physical fitness and regular exercise are both physical and mental. The NHS specifically recommends keeping fit because 'people who exercise regularly have a lower risk of developing many long-term (chronic) conditions, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and some cancers. Research shows that physical activity can also boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy, as well as reducing your risk of stress, clinical depression, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease.’ (NHS website) Packed with information and fitness activities, the topics covered on the OCNLR Introduction to Health and Fitness course include: How to plan an effective training session How to exercise with confidence and enjoyment by yourself, with a friend, family member, or in groups (e.g. teams, exercise classes) Learning about a range of physical fitness activities Training over a specified period of time (e.g. preparing for an event, a race, achieving personal health goals) Staying safe during exercise to minimise risk of injury to ourselves and others Good use of fitness equipment (safe and effective every time!) By the end of the course, learners will be equipped to be their own physical fitness trainer. They will know how to exercise in different contexts, across a variety of activities, and using a range of equipment.
