What you will learn

This 3-day course is designed for those with little or no experience with clay who would like to learn the basics of ceramic making using handbuilding techniques. You will also learn how to decorate your pieces ready for bisque firing. This will be a relaxed and informative course, a great escape from your busy lives while learning a new skill. You will be guided by the tutor to make 3 items to be picked up at a later date. At the end of this course, you should have the skills and knowledge to independently develop your own projects in clay.

  • Understand basic ceramic technical language
  • Workshop health and safety and guidance on pottery tools.
  • How to decorate your pieces using slip or underglaze.

    Demonstration, Q&A and guidance by tutor both individual and group these are practical hands-on sessions to develop your understanding of clay. You will receive handouts to take away with you.

    Entry requirements

    None – Beginners welcome no previous knowledge of ceramics is required.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    Excellent attendance and punctuality are required from all students, you need to be able to join all three sessions to get the most out of this course. We make a £2 per kilo charge for clay, which includes the bisque and glaze firing. The ceramics studio is on the 3rd floor and there is lift access.

    What you need

    Pen and notebook, clothes you do not mind getting dirty, closed toe shoes. Please bring any clay tools you have, however, there will be pottery tools available to use on the course, there are also beginners packs to buy at the college if you would like your own.
