What you will learn

The Level 4 units in the first year of the HTQ will provide students with a board introduction to the support professions found in the healthcare sector.

Students will gain a wide range of sector knowledge tied to practical skills gained in evidence-based practice, personal research, self-study, directed study and workplace learning and experience. Our Level 5 (year 2) units are designed to support progression into relevant occupational areas in healthcare and students will concentrate on nursing as a particular aspect of healthcare practice. Students will need to have access to relevant, suitable, and appropriate workplaces/placements before embarking on the unit of nursing. Units are:

Innovation and Improvement through Participatory Action Research
Reflective Approaches in Implementing Person-centred Practice
Planning Care in Practice• Meeting the Needs of Individuals with Long-term Health Conditions
Team and Individual Leadership: Mentoring and Coaching Others
End of Life Care Planning and Support• Nursing – Principles and Fundamentals of Practice

By the end of Level 5 students will have developed a sound understanding of the principles of nursing in the healthcare sector and will have learned to apply those principles more widely. Students will be able to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems. They will be able to perform effectively in their chosen field of nursing and will have the qualities necessary for employment in situations requiring the exercise of personal responsibility and decision-making.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Demonstrate understanding of the application of law and policy in a health and social care practice setting.
Examine the health, care and support services available to an individual requiring multidisciplinary care
Develop a quality improvement plan embedding co-production principles.
Design a local health education initiative for potential implementation using a theoretical model of health education.
Assess the implications of the use of mathematical methods and scientific rationales for healthcare practice.
Explain the interrelationship of body systems in good and ill health from a physiological perspective
Develop a participatory action research proposal to explore a specific aspect of service delivery in health and social care
Review the benefits of planning person-centred care/episodes of care in the workplace
Support the needs of individuals with long-term health conditions in a healthcare setting
Critically explore how mentorship and coaching practices empower individuals and benefit self, service users and organisations.
Examine how cultural, religious and social factors influence end-of-life care planning and support
Assess the impact of significant life events on individuals and their social networks

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: BTEC Higher National Diploma in Healthcare Professions' Support for England [EDEXCEL]

Class format and activities

The mode of delivery for this course involves a combination of in-centre learning and live webinars and interactive learning. The Microsoft Teams online platform and supported apps are used to support learning together with videos to review lectures, work-based learning activities, presentations, tutorials, online learning, workshops, critical debates, and seminars. In addition, you will be supported by a work-based professional advocate and tutors at Morley College London.

Progress is measured by assignments, work-related projects, demonstration of professional competence in work-based situations, and practical activities that apply the knowledge you have gained. There are no written exams. When not attending timetabled sessions, you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. This typically will involve reading articles and books, working on individual projects, undertaking preparing coursework assignments and presentations.

Your independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities including online resources, the library and Canvas, the online virtual learning platform.

Entry Requirements

We welcome applications from anyone with relevant work and experience and capable of reaching the standards required by the qualification. All students are expected to have a good standard of computer literacy. Applicants will be invited for interview to discuss their work and experience in more detail.

Students who have recently been in education are likely to need one of the following:

a BTEC Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care or similar
a GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject

This profile is likely to be supported by:

GCSE grades at A* to C (or equivalent) and/or 9 to 4 (or equivalent) in subjects such as maths and English
other related Level 3 qualifications
an Access to Higher Education Diploma from an approved further education institution
relevant work experience, or
an international equivalent to the above qualifications

Our Recognition of Prior Learning policy means that students’ previous learning and experience can be taken into account, and they may be awarded certain qualifications or units of a qualification based on that learning or experience. Students applying for this course that is taught and assessed completely in English will need a certain level of English language skills.

Before accepting students onto a programme, we will make sure that those who are non-native English speakers and who have not carried out their final two years of schooling in English can demonstrate ability at a standard equivalent to:

Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) level B2 ? PTE Academic 51, or
IELTS 5.5 (reading and writing must be at 5.5)

Before you enrol

Delivery of the course we be across 2 days a week from 8:30am to 5:30pm on a Thursday and Friday. Teaching will be a combination of face-to-face when you will need to attend college in person and online via live-webinars and interactive learning when you will need to be available for the live sessions.

Students are expected to undertake independent study and complete assignments and coursework outside of college time. The College has a range of specialist resources to support the delivery of the programme. You will have access to computers, scanners, and printers in the HTQ Healthcare department and in the College’s learning centre.

Students will be assessed through graded projects and coursework, assignments, and reflective journals.

Progression to university The Level 5 Higher National Diploma is recognised by Higher Education providers as meeting admission requirements to many relevant health and social care-related courses, for example:

BA or BSc (Hons) in Health and Social Care
BA or BSc (Hons) in Health Studies
BSc (Hons) in Adult Nursing Apprenticeships

In addition, there are established routes into higher apprenticeships in health and social care such as:
