What you will learn

This glaze course, at Morley Waterloo, is for students at the intermediate level, who would like to develop their knowledge o f glaze technology and theory, testing and analysing glazes. You will explore a range of glazes, including ‘special effects’ types, adjust colour and surface texture using minerals and oxides and examine glaze defects. You will gain a deeper understanding of the chemical processes that occur during a firing. Activity includes exploring both stoneware and earthenware glazes, testing, analysing and reviewing your results as a group, to develop further your awareness of glaze theory.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify and explore earthenware, stoneware and special effect glazes
  • Recognise and analyse glaze defects
  • Study oxides and connect them to materials
  • Demonstrate awareness of Health and Safety issues in ceramics through safe studio practice, with consideration towards others

    Class format and activities

    You will be listening and note taking about the chemistry and theory of materials. You will be making glaze tests, analysing and sharing your results, having group discussions and looking at glaze potentials.

    Entry requirements

    This course is for intermediate level students who have an understanding of the ceramic process and some experience in making glazes.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    The ceramics department is on the 5th floor and there is lift access. If you have any concerns or requirements, please discuss this with your tutor who will be happy to give guidance, or assistance if required.

    What you need

    A notebook and pen will be essential. You will also need an apron or old shirt. Appropriate masks will be available to buy at £3 each. you may bring your own.

    What you can do next

    Morley College offers a wide range of courses at all levels of ability. We recommend you attend at least 2 terms on the beginner course before moving on to various mixed level courses. Students can also look to progress onto certificated Part or full time Ceramics or 3D courses such as BETC, BA degree or MA postgraduate courses. Your tutor is also happy to advise in setting up your own studio. Some students move on to setting up their own ceramic practice and exhibiting in open studio / house weekends and local and national craft fairs and galleries.
