What you will learn

Explore ideas of cloth and memory using heat processes to set fabrics into relief surface and structures. Colour and enhance the relief form of man-made fabrics using heat transfer printing and create textile samples with a variety of potential applications. Explore a range of manipulation techniques such as crumpling and crushing, and tying in of small objects to create textured 3d and relief surfaces using steam to heat set fabrics into new surface textures and forms. Combine with the immediacy of sublimation printing (heat transfer printing) to transform man-made fabric with luscious, layered colour printing. The focus will be on the idea of the idea of cloth and memory, to comparative issues of sustainability in relation to fabric and dye choices, and to further developments in terms of potential applications to fashion, art or interior projects.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Use a variety of manipulation techniques
Use steam to heat set fabrics
Combine methods with sublimation printing on man-made fabrics according to personal choices
Create a range of tactile, textured printed, structured textile samples using these techniques
Develop awareness of sustainability issues relating to dyes and fibres
Develop ideas relating to cloth and memory

Class format and activities

Guidance will be given about materials, in tandem with developing the theme. Demonstrations, group and individual support and discussion, illustration with samples and visual presentations will guide you through the various processes. Practical work will be further supported by handouts. You will be encouraged to share knowledge and experience through discussion and show and tell. You will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment. There will be a small amount of preparatory or follow up work to be done outside class. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course, you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e.: progression to an advanced level course.

Entry requirements

The class is aimed to support all levels. No previous experience is necessary. More advanced learners will be encouraged to extend their knowledge/application of these processes.

What you need to know before you enrol

The class is situated on the second floor of the Nancy Seear Building. There is partial disabled access is via a stair lift. Please contact additional learning needs (ALS) on: 0207 450 1972 before enrolling if you have any mobility support.

What you need

For printing we will be working mainly with man-made fabrics so it would be good to have a selection of these at different weights, and light in colour, a notebook, a basic sewing kit including a quick unpick, overall and gloves as we will be painting heat transfer dyes.
