This hands-on, practical course introduces learners to the creative and expressive possibilities of contemporary ceramics. Suitable for beginners and those with some experience, it explores a range of techniques and concepts used by modern ceramic artists. Learners will experiment with hand-building methods, surface decoration, and glazing processes, while also being encouraged to develop their own ideas and artistic voice. Each session will combine demonstrations with studio time, allowing participants to create functional or sculptural pieces inspired by current trends in ceramic art. The course will also include short discussions on influential contemporary ceramicists, encouraging learners to reflect on form, texture, and purpose in their own work. Participants will learn how to work with different types of clay, explore slip decoration and gain confidence in the basics of kiln preparation. By the end of the course, learners will have gained practical skills, a deeper understanding of ceramics as a contemporary art form, and a portfolio of finished pieces to take home.
