"Draw and Paint: Landscape Painting", is a practical and inspiring course designed for anyone eager to explore the beauty of the natural world through art. Whether you're a beginner or looking to develop your existing skills, this course will guide you through the essential techniques of drawing and painting landscapes using a variety of media. Over the duration of the course, you’ll learn how to observe and interpret different environments — from dramatic skies and rolling hills to urban scenes and seascapes. Through guided exercises and personal projects, you will explore composition, perspective, colour mixing, and mark-making, helping you to build confidence and express your own creative vision. Working from photographs, sketches, and (where possible) life, you'll gain insight into both traditional and contemporary approaches to landscape art. By the end of the course, you'll have developed a personal body of work and a deeper appreciation for the art of capturing place and atmosphere.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Develop observational skills to accurately interpret and depict a range of landscape elements, including landforms, vegetation, skies, and water.
  • Apply fundamental drawing and painting techniques, including composition, perspective, and colour theory, to create balanced and expressive landscape artworks.
  • Experiment with a variety of materials and media, such as pencil, charcoal, ink, watercolour, and acrylics, to discover personal preferences and approaches to landscape painting.

Class format and activities

This practical, studio-based course combines group instruction with individual support in a relaxed and inclusive adult learning environment. Each session includes a short demonstration or discussion followed by hands-on making, allowing you to explore a range of materials and techniques at your own pace. You will work from source materials such as photographs, sketches, and observed landscapes, with opportunities to develop both quick studies and more sustained pieces. Activities include drawing, colour mixing, composition planning, and painting in various media. Group feedback and optional peer sharing encourage reflection and confidence as you develop your personal approach to landscape painting.

Entry requirements

This course is open to adults of all abilities, including complete beginners and those with some experience who wish to refresh or build on their skills. No formal training or previous art education is required—just an interest in drawing and painting, and a willingness to experiment and learn. The course is designed to support a range of learning styles and experience levels, with tailored guidance to suit individual needs.

What you need to know before you enrol

By enrolling on this course, students agree to adhere to the student code of conduct and Health & Safety guidance as posted or as directed by a member of staff. As a Morley College student, you will have access to Microsoft Office platforms, including a dedicated Morley College email. You will need to use your Morley email address for certain college activities

Although some basic resources are available for use in studio, you will need A sketchbook (A4 or A3) for notes, studies, and preliminary sketches Pencils (HB, 2B, 4B) and an eraser, Charcoal sticks or a soft graphite stick (optional) A basic set of acrylic or watercolour paints, Brushes (a small selection of round and flat brushes in various sizes) some of these materials are available to buy in studio.
