What you will learn

Cuba has an outstanding dance culture, best known for salsa, but there are many others such as cha cha cha, mambo, bolero, rueda de casino and son. An introduction to the world of Cuban dancing, the passion and rhythms. Your class includes 30 minutes of level one warm-up & 30 minutes of level one technique. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the following learning outcomes. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to an advanced-level course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • To mix and improvise the different Cuban dance styles, including Chachacha, Mambo, Reggeton , Afro Cuban Rumba, old Cuban rhythms like Mozambique, Pilon and Conga - according to the music
  • Identify different Salsa Rhythms from each other, to begin to feel the music
  • Control the dance styles of each rhythm
  • Distinguish between quiet and dynamic parts in the song and improvise with the learned steps

    Warming up with basic Reggeton, solo men’s and ladies styling and various Cuban Rhythms introduction, Cuban dance styles - simple steps of Chachacha, Mambo, Afro Cuban Rumba, old Cuban rhythms like Mozambique, Pilon and Conga, Reggeton - according to the music. In order to ensure you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor.  In addition to your dance practice, study can include the use of digital resources such as film & photography, useful websites and connection with online communities of interest via social media to enhance your learning.

    Entry requirements

    Preferably students should know basic steps of Salsa and Cha Cha Cha, however all levels accepted.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    Remember the dance routines from previous week. Maybe go through the routines throughout the week. Excellent attendance and punctuality will be required from all students. This course will include some completion of activities outside of class time, e.g. preparation of favourite exercises to share with fellow students. Photography and film recording of class activities may be used in order to aid learning. These images may also be used for publicity or marketing materials produced by Morley College, both online and in print. You will have the opportunity to either confirm or decline consent to being filmed or photographed. Please consult your doctor if you are pregnant, have any serious health conditions or a history of injury. Please inform your tutor if there is any physical activity you have be advised to avoid.

    What you need

    Light trainers Women dancers may find wearing a soft-soled shoe with a small heel will improve their styling. Ask the teacher for advice on purchasing the correct shoes if you wish to do this. Boots and thick soled trainers are not suitable. Clothing should allow free movement, as this is an energetic class.

    Continue to the next term of Cuban Rhythms and Dance or ask your tutor, who will be able to assess if you are ready to progress on to a higher level, as well as suggest complementary styles of study to enhance your current practice, including music and drama studies.
