This introduction to basketry will cover some of the main techniques of contemporary soft-fibre basketry, including coiling, checkweave plaiting, twining, random weave, and looping. You will work with a range of materials, from yarn and paper to cane and foraged fibres. Beginners will learn the basic techniques and have the opportunity to practise with different materials. Those with more experience can develop their skills further through working on their own projects.

Cost
Class format and activities
You will look at and discuss relevant samples and watch demonstrations of techniques. You will practise the techniques with observation and feedback from the tutor. You will also share your knowledge and experience with the group through discussion and show and tell. Our art and design studios are well-equipped with a range of industry and specialist tools and equipment in a shared access environment. As a college, we look to embed sustainable practice through reducing waste, recycling and upcycling of materials. In the interest of sustainability, Morley College uses Teams and MyDay as digital platforms for sharing resources and information.
Entry requirements
No previous experience is necessary, but a degree of manual dexterity is required. Students with basketry experience will be encouraged to build on their existing skills.

The class is situated on the second floor of the Nancy Seear Building. There is partial disabled access via a stair lift. Please contact ALS on: 0207 450 1972 before enrolling if you have any mobility support needs. By enrolling on this course, students agree to adhere to the student code of conduct and health & safety guidance as posted or as directed by a member of staff. As a Morley College student, you will have access to Microsoft Office platforms, including a dedicated Morley College email. What you need
Pen and notebook to make notes, folder for handouts. Basic materials will be provided, but you may want to explore others if working on your own project. This could include sustainably foraged or recycled materials.
