What you will learn

This hands-on course introduces learners to the creative and technical processes involved in designing and making contemporary jewellery. Ideal for beginners or those looking to refresh their skills, the course encourages experimentation with materials, form, and techniques to develop a personal approach to wearable art. Each week will explore a different aspect of contemporary jewellery, from concept development and sketching ideas to working with metal, wire, beads, resin, and found objects. Learners will gain experience in basic techniques such as sawing, filing, soldering, texturing, and cold connections, with a strong focus on safety and workshop best practices. Throughout the course, participants will be encouraged to reflect on their influences, explore current trends, and push creative boundaries. By the end, each student will have produced a small collection or final piece that reflects their individual aesthetic and technical development.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Familiarise with jewellery studio, equipment and health and safety precautions
  • Understand metal properties, annealing, work hardening and manipulation of metal
  • Use basic jewellery skills of piercing, drilling, shaping using pliers, soldering, pickling, filing up and cleaning
  • Use basic jewellery making skills to apply to own ideas and designs
  • Sketch up simple jewellery designs which employ the basic skills and techniques
  • Make a final article which demonstrates use of the basic skills and techniques

Class format and activities

Tutor demonstration and explanation. Students practice skill sin the specialist jewellery studio. Annotations made by students to support practical tasks. Basic sketches made by students to express own ideas
