Class format and activities

Our art and design studios are well-equipped with a range of industry and specialist tools and equipment in a shared access environment. As a college, we look to embed sustainable practice through reducing waste, recycling and upcycling of materials. In the interest of sustainability, Morley College uses Teams and MyDay as digital platforms for sharing resources and information. Health and safety inductions are planned into your course delivery, and you are asked not to use any machinery or specialist equipment until you have received specific training. Morley provides a positive and friendly atmosphere and to support this all students should be considerate and kind and work in a collegiate and collaborative way and respect the needs of other students. Course content will be delivered through weekly demonstrations to help you build confidence in working with stretch and knit fabrics. Your tutor will provide guidance on how to follow written pattern instructions for intermediate level. You will benefit from participating in group discussions and receive individual support and guidance. Specialist equipment for use during the course includes industrial sewing machines and overlockers. Attendance and punctuality are key to benefit from your course. Achievement on your course will depend on your attendance and pace of work in relation to the above learning outcomes.

Entry requirements

This course is an intermediate level class. To prepare for this level, we recommend you complete two or more beginner level courses at Morley College (one of these must be a garment with set-in sleeves). By enrolling at this level, you confirm you are able to: Check body measurements against pattern and understand ease. Carry out basic pattern alterations such as lengthening/shortening, widening/narrowing. Use grainlines and cut out fabric following lay plans. Understand pattern markings. Use a home sewing machine confidently and safely. If after the first session, it becomes apparent that this is not the right course for your level of skill, we can arrange a transfer to an alternative course at the right level for you, subject to availability. Students must be able to read, write and understand fluent English. Digital, mathematics and numeracy skills are desirable but not essential.

What you need to know before you enrol

By enrolling on this course, students agree to adhere to the student code of conduct and Health and Safety guidance as posted or as directed by a member of staff. As a Morley College student, you will have access to Microsoft Office platforms, including a dedicated Morley College email. You will need to use your Morley email address for certain college activities. Working on patterns and cutting out fabric can involve standing at high tables for a period of time. Please let the tutor know if this would be difficult for you. Sewing machines have a foot operated speed control. The fashion studios are on the first floor of the Nancy Seear building and there is a lift access to the first floor. Please note that eating is not allowed in the fashion studios - you are allowed to have bottled water. Pattern paper and card are available for use in the fashion studios free of charge. Calico is also available for purchase and prices will be posted in the studio. You will also need to purchase a machine bobbin from your tutor for £1, refundable at the end of the course. You will need to buy a pattern from the college for use during your course. All students will be required to use the pattern selected by the course tutor in keeping with the stated garment style. We are unable to allow students to bring their own patterns or to select an alternate style, as this affects session planning and delivery.

What you need

Please bring a pen, notebook and folder. You will also need a sewing kit and basic pattern cutting supplies; your tutor will provide advice and guidance at the start of the course. Some pattern cutting equipment is available for use in the studios. You must provide your own fabrics, haberdashery, threads, etc. for use on your projects. Your tutor will go over this in the first lesson.

What you can do next

Attending at least two terms of the Clothes Making Intermediate course will build your knowledge and skills as you work on different garment types. Progression to advanced level is possible once you have achieved competence at using commercial patterns, using a sewing machine and making intermediate garments to a good standard.
