This course will provide you with a thorough introduction to the general principles and skills of beginner's clothes making and sewing. Build confidence in using a purchased commercial pattern and a home sewing machine to create a garment in your own size. Each term will focus on a different garment shape to help you expand your repertoire in preparation for your next steps. Garment styles involve simple pattern adjustments and methods of construction. This term will focus on modest fashion, explained by Glamour magazine as follows: 'while the look and feel of modest fashion can vary from person to person, it generally refers to wearing less revealing clothing – think higher necklines, long-sleeve shirts, looser cuts and free-flowing silhouettes. '
Our art and design studios are well-equipped with a range of industry and specialist tools and equipment in a shared access environment. As a college, we look to embed sustainable practice through reducing waste, recycling and upcycling of materials. In the interest of sustainability, Morley College uses Teams and MyDay as digital platforms for sharing resources and information. You will be guided through a tutor set project using demonstrations, individual work sessions, and tutor led discussions and feedback. Sessions will introduce you to new skills and techniques for your project while also recapping prior learning. An induction will be required before using any studio equipment or machinery, including irons and sewing machines. Attendance and punctuality are key to benefit from your course. Achievement on your course will depend on your attendance and pace of work in relation to the above learning outcomes.
This is a beginners course. All are welcome, suitable for people with limited or no previous experience. Students must be able to speak, read and write in English and have basic numeracy skills.
By enrolling on this course, students agree to adhere to the student code of conduct and Health and Safety guidance as posted or as directed by a member of staff. As a Morley College student, you will have access to Microsoft Office platforms, including a dedicated Morley College email. You will need to use your Morley email address for certain college activities. Working on patterns and cutting out fabric can involve standing at high tables for a period of time. Please let the tutor know if this would be difficult for you. Sewing machines have a foot operated speed control. The fashion studios are on the first floor of the Nancy Seear building and there is a lift access to the first floor. Please note the eating is not allowed in the fashion studios - you are allowed to have bottled water. Pattern paper is available for use on the fashion studios free of charge. You will need to buy a pattern from the college for use during your course. All students will be required to use the pattern selected by the course tutor in keeping with the stated garment style. Calico is also available for purchase and prices will be posted in the studio.
Please bring a pen, notebook and folder. You will also need a sewing kit; your tutor will provide advice and guidance at the start of the course.
