What you will learn

The Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE) Creative Practice: Millinery course at Morley College London is a flexible full and part-time programme offering a millinery and multidisciplinary creative education. It equips students with core millinery production skills, personal, and professional development through individual and collaborative projects. Over this one-year full-time or two years part-time course of level 4 study, students gain and develop a solid grounding in millinery, additionally focusing on wider skills of analysis, reflection, research, and digital competencies. Collaborative projects introduce the dynamic nature of the creative industries and build essential capabilities for multidisciplinary work. ? Throughout the course, students are encouraged to explore, innovate, and apply their millinery and wider creativity skills to real-world challenges, shaping their ambitions in a supportive, individual and multidisciplinary environment The course has close industry links with The British Hat Guild, Lock & Co Hatters, the English National Opera millinery department and the Worshipful Company of Feltmakers, all of whom provide career development opportunities for our students.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Class format and activities

You will learn actively through studio and workshop-based teaching. Using our specialist facilities students will develop design skills and independent working practices, complemented by technical demonstrations, industry visits and presentations

Entry requirements

Applicants should have achieved a level 3 qualification with 64 UCAS points in a relevant creative subject, GCSEs, grade 4/C in English (or an equivalent qualification). For non-native English speakers, an IELTS 5.5 is required. We offer places based on your portfolio. All students should be computer literate, with a working knowledge of programs like Microsoft Office. We invite all applicants to a taster day to experience practice sessions and present their portfolio in a personal interview. We welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds, including those who do not have formal qualifications, are mature students, have relevant work experience and have qualifications different from those typically required. If this applies to you, you will need to show you have the aptitude and potential to succeed on the course. We will assess this during an interview, following Morley's Accreditation of Prior Learning Policy and Procedure and Student Transfer Plan.

What you need to know before you enrol

This course will be delivered in person by attendance at college and online via live webinars and e-learning. All students will need to attend college between 2 to 3 days a week full-time and 1 and 1.5 days a week part-time and access live webinars and e-learning where required. Students are expected to undertake independent study and complete assignments and coursework outside of college time. The College has a range of specialist resources to support the delivery of the programme. You will have access to a wide range of millinery equipment – blocks, steamers, irons, fume cupboard, laser cutter, vacuum forming machine, heat press, 17 Guinea straw plait/braid machine and sewing machines. Students will be assessed through graded projects and coursework, assignments, and reflective journals.

You can apply for student finance at https://www.gov.uk/student-finance-register-login. This course can be studied in full-time or part-time modes. You will need access to a laptop or PC to carry out independent study and complete assignments. Students are asked to provide their own personal millinery sewing kits, which will include a combination of standard sewing equipment and some millinery-specific tools. Depending on the direction of a student’s work, equipment and materials will need to be individually sourced during the course. A list of relevant textbooks will be shared at the start of the course.
