What you will learn

This course is aimed at beginners and is also suitable for all levels. This course will give you the chance to explore ceramics and its potential for creative output, and in doing so improve your wellbeing. Students will be introduced to Throwing on the potters wheel and will be encouraged to develop their skills and to express their own creative ideas throughout the workshop. You will learn techniques to make simple items and learn about slip decoration and glazing. You will be offered the opportunity to experiment with surface decoration techniques such as slip trailing, wax resist, sgraffito and glazing.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Learn how to use a potters wheel
  • Decorate items with slips and underglazes, and how to use glaze to decorative effect
  • Keep a working journal of inspirational material from the internet and magazines, sketches and technical notes for your own benefit and is not compulsory
  • Make a variety of ceramic pieces using various throwing techniques

Entry requirements

You must be aged 19 or over at the start date of the course. If you are a beginner or someone with more experience, this will be suitable for you.

What you need to know before you enrol

There is some physical activity in ceramics, for example, wedging clay, which requires a moderate level of physical fitness - if you have any concerns please talk to your tutor who will be happy to give guidance, or assistance if required. Clay is available to purchase from your tutor

What you need

A sketchbook and pen are useful. You will also need an apron or old shirt and a mask. Your tutor will advise you about which tools to purchase. Clay and plaster are available to purchase from your tutor.
