What you will learn

This course in interior design and architecture gives you the opportunity to explore the vast subject of the world of Design and Architecture. Based in our specialist design studios you will work on projects that mirror those in industry, taught by R Rubio, an Interior Architect with more than 25 years’ experience in consultancy. Projects include domestic, commercial and product design, writing articles and collaborations with architects, engineers, designers and trades in the UK, Europe and the Middle East. She has worked in Barcelona, Austria, Germany, Scotland and London where primarily she has been concentrating on renovations, interior design and lecturing. On completing the course you can choose to progress onto the Level 3 Certificate in Interior Design & Styling at Morley College. Previous students have progressed to renowned institutions such as Central Saint Martins, Chelsea College of Art, Metropolitan University, Glasgow School of Art and employment.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand design processes, research skills, idea generation and artwork presentation
  • Colour, materials and processes
  • Develop technical drawing skills in order to visualise interior concepts
  • Develop hand drawn rendering skills to add colour and texture to visuals
  • Collate documentation of working methods and technical notes
  • Produce scaled models of your interior concepts
  • Produce samples and concept boards
  • Produce a portfolio of interior design concepts

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: BTEC Certificate in Art and Design Skills [EDEXCEL]

Class format and activities

Teaching is both as a whole class and on an individual one-to-one basis using demonstrations, discussion, examples, samples, handouts and other creative and technical support material. Relevant topics in Art, Design, demonstrations and workshop practice will form the main body of the learning environment to embrace the challenging interior design projects. As you begin to develop your own designs, you will do more independent work. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment. The course also includes visits to relevant events & museums and comprehensive careers advice. The Assessment takes place after the completion of the different projects related to two BTEC units. Entry requirements

An enthusiasm for the subject and willingness to learn. (Previous creative work is welcome.) A task will be sent to the candidates and an informal interview will be arranged with all selected candidates.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality are required from all students. Teaching is classroom based. R. Rubio highly values equality, diversity and enrichment for all the students and encourages an awareness of the diverse world of Interior design & Architecture.

What you need

A series of different tools and materials will need to be bought during the year. The list of materials will be provided on the induction day. The Design Studio is well-equipped for the students to use.

What you can do next

Upon successful completion, learners can seek employment/self-employment in the Interior Design industry. Students will also be able to progress into the level BTEC Certificate course at North Kensington led by Rosalia Rubio. rosalia.rubio@morleycollege.ac.u
