What you will learn

For players with at least a year's experience. Improve your bass playing by learning advanced harmony and chord charts, confidence in rhythm, tempo and performing with other musicians in a variety of contemporary styles.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Play grooves, riffs and improvisation in the styles of swing, boogie-woogie, rock, R and B, funk, shuffle funk, country rock, blues
  • Play a wider range of scales and arpeggios
  • Understand chord symbols and chord sequences
  • Apply chromatic movements, riffs and grooves more effectively
  • Play a variety of contrasting exercises in tempo
  • Read basic music notation
  • Perform with confidence and skill
  • Understand how to progress to the next level.

  • Class format and activities

    Classes will be held at Morley College and are continuous over three terms. Each term is a separate course: Bass Guitar 2A (from September), Bass Guitar 2B (from January), Bass Guitar 2C (from April). The tutor provides handouts for each lesson and demonstrates current coursework, including any details about theory, harmony, rhythm, phrasing, and technique. Students are encouraged to perform each exercise, which the tutor accompanies on guitar, piano or with backing tracks. Play-along backing tracks are provided for homework and personal development. To ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, feedback, advice, and Q&A sessions are conducted in a constructive and supportive environment.

    Entry requirements

    A reasonable command of your instrument and a basic understanding of chord symbols and harmony is required, This course follows on from Bass Guitar 1, but is also designed for those who have not attended before. If in doubt, please discuss with the tutor which bass guitar course you are most suited for.     Due to the nature or the instrument producing high noise levels, you may wish to bring ear plugs to lessons.
