What you will learn

Further develop your aural awareness with solfa in this practical course based on Kodály principles. Suitable for those with fluent music reading skills and previous knowledge and experience of the Kodály method. The course will involve developing sight singing and transcription skills as well as developing students’ understanding of harmony.

Class format and activities

A continuation from Aural training level 2, this course develops students’ aural awareness, sight singing and transcription skills. The course is suitable for those wanting to improve their musicianship with a focus on deep internalisation of musical concepts where the musical experience is at the centre of learning. The course is suitable for those wanting to develop their own musicianship or to develop further a Kodály-based approach for their teaching practice. Classes will consist of lots of practical exercises involving group singing, movement, clapping and listening. There will be no mandatory homework, but practice of the material between classes will be very beneficial.

Entry requirements

This course is a continuation from Aural training level 2, so you should have fluency with relative solfa, be able to pitch notes accurately with your voice and be familiar with elementary music theory. You need to be able to follow written and verbal instructions in English, participate in class discussions and practical activities, and take your own notes.

What you need to know before you enrol

The topics, which will be covered during this course, are:Sight sing melodies using relative solfa (moveable 'doh' / tonic solfa) Transcribing rhythm and melodies Sing and hear chord progressions in major and minor keys Develop understanding of harmony and recognise different types of cadence Read scores and identify salient musical features

What you need

You will need to bring manuscript paper, pencil and eraser. Other materials will be provided in class and via Google Classroom.
