This course will look at the intersecting lives and interests of four East Anglian painters in the mid 20th century: Cedric Morris, John Nash, Edward Bawden, and John Aldridge and their successors such as Richard Bawden and John Morley. Cedric Morris' old house, the painting school and garden - Benton End - has been bought by the Pinchbeck Foundation for the Garden Museum with the aim of turning it back into a place of art and plants. There have been recent exhibitions of John Nash’s work as an accompaniment to a new biography. John Morley has an exhibition at the Garden History Museum this year. It seems an appropriate time to revisit the work and lives of these artist plantsmen. No previous knowledge is necessary. The course is for anyone interested in mid 20th century British Art, Gardens and botanical art.
